We have an early afternoon train from Paris to Montpellier, about 750 km (465 miles) away, by the Mediterranean. But, first, we are in Paris and head out for an early morning walk. We wander through the Jardin des Tuileries with its spring plantings and small boats sailing in the pond.

Across from Notre Dame, the Square René Viviani is freshly planted and full of people enjoying the views and fragrances.Notre Dame

Crossing the Seine to Ile Saint-Louis, a small island behind Notre Dame, we find a new museum where there used to be a park. The Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation is dedicated to the 200,000 people who were deported from Vichy France to Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War.

Walking back along the Seine to pick up our luggage, we come across a parade and enjoy the cavalry passing by.

Along the banks of the Seine, the roads are closed and the banquettes are filling up with people enjoying the morning on the river.

We cut through the Tuileries to our hotel, grab our bags, and head over to Gare de Lyon to catch our train to Montpellier.
